The Childrens Home

In 2001 Baphumelele was registered as a care centre for abandoned and abused children. A temporary structure located on site is being used to house those children today, but is unsuitable for ongoing residence.
Thanks to the most generous donation of USD25 000 from the United States Embassy, Rosie and her team of volunteers are currently busy building a new building that will house some of the children. This structure is due to be completed by the end of July 2004. Rosie and the board of Baphumelele intend to raise funds to develop more facilties for the abandoned and abused children, as well as a cluster of workshops for further training.
The Children's Home in Baphumelele currently houses 26 abandoned or orphaned children ranging in ages from 6 months to 16 years.

They rely heavily on the services of volunteers. People drop by to cook meals, wash and iron clothing, administer medicines and generally look after the babies, toddlers and older children.
The existing kitchen in the childrens home consists of a small space measuring about 3x4 metres. A four plate stove and small counter area is where meals for all 26 children areprepared. Children who are old enough are roped in to assist with all the chores - from making beds to helping with the babies, before and after school.
Donations of food are welcomed with glee - sometimes the children are without a substantial meal for a few days at a time and sweet treats are a rarity. These kids rely on the kindness and generosity of the public to top up the meagre funds received from the government.
On occasion the kids have received donations of clothing, shoes and toys, but even these when distributed
