Baphumelele Second-Hand Shop

Baphumelele is ever grateful for the generous donations of clothing and household goods that local community members and organizations bestow on the Children's Home. Sometimes we are fortunate enough to receive in-kind gifts from abroad as well.

On occasion we will receive more donations of a certain item (short-sleeved t-shirts for toddlers, for example) than we can practically put to use at the moment. For a long time the surplus was stored away for future use. However, the idea came about that Baphumelele could - and should - share any excess goods with the community and allow the donation made to the Children's Home to benefit the kids today.

For this reason, Baphumelele opened a Second-Hand Shop in February 2006.

After donations have been sorted through and distributed to our children and caregivers according to need, any remaining items are passed on to the Second-Hand Shop and sold for minimal prices (children's clothing at R5; adult clothing at R10). The shop helps the community at large by offering affordable items; it also benefits Baphumelele by taking in a small income which goes straight back to the Children's Home.

At present, a small group of local women run the Second-Hand Shop on a volunteer basis every Saturday (except in winter).
